Bovey's Community garden starts to bear fruit

Sun 4 Oct 2009

National Trust and Bovey's Community garden starts to bear fruit, well vegetables.

Bovey Climate Action (BCA) Community garden is lovely walled garden in a National Trust Estate at Parke, close to Bovey Tracey on the edge of Dartmoor.  Parke's walled garden, which was once overrun with brambles, is now a thriving community garden and one the first of many National Trust community gardens throughout the UK.

As the garden starts to bear fruit, well vegetables, BCA’s gardeners’ efforts grow beyond expectations. And in a time of recessions, job losses and general cutting back, it makes a great relief to hear about something growing, positive and prosperous.

Even generous, as Teignbridge District Council are giving Bovey's Community Garden a free dumpy bag of compost (locally made by Go Green Devon). This on the same day that the community gardeners are sending a veggie box of their own produce to the National Trust's Council Members, to show them what a wonderful success the garden is.

Bovey's Community Garden is particularly good for people who don’t have gardens themselves. You maybe on a long allotment waiting list, maybe you just don’t know enough yourself and want to learn more about or you just simply haven’t got the time to do it all yourself.

So you come and volunteer in the community garden, planting vegetables and earning tokens that you can 'buy' produce with.  Regulars of all ages come after work and at weekends to plant food, share ideas and feel that they are doing something productive for themselves and their families. They are making some great personal choices about the type of food they eat, reducing their food bill along with their Co2 emissions and having a wonderful community experience. This entire feel good factor for just for a couple of hours of volunteering a week, bargain!

So to get planting, saving money and eating wonderful food in this area contact the Garden Coordinator, Gail Banham gailbanham@tq139qt.freeserve.co.uk, or ring her on 01626.832478.

STOP  PRESS: BCA are winners!

This fabulous community garden is an example of one of the initiatives that led to BCA (and Bovey Tracey) being awarded the C+ Carbon Positive Communities Award earlier this year.   The award recognised work to reduce carbon emissions and was open to individuals, communities, charities and voluntary sector organisations, local authorities, public agencies and partnerships based in the South West;  from as far as Cheltenham to Cornwall.  BCA were up against 2 other community led finalists; Bradford on Avon Climate Action and Woolsery Sports and Community Hall Community Led Project. Jonathon Porritt presented the award to 4 of BCA's members.

This is what the judges had to say about us...

Bovey is a clear exemplar inititative; its programme clearly shows collaborative action as it has engaged the entire community.  It is this aspect that has given Bovey the edge.  It is also leveraging its carbon reduction achievements in many creative ways". Click here for more information
