What are the benefits of chimney linings?

Sun 28 Feb 2010

We all enjoy having a fire in our living areas for warmth and comfort, to see the dancing flames and glowing coals plus to provide a focal point in our homes.

However, for any fire to work properly, whether it is an open fire, room heater, multi-fuel or wood burning stove, there needs to be a chimney and correctly fitted flue in place, both in good working order.

What we are not always aware of is that a chimney can be a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning waiting to happen! Over time, the brick surround and, in some properties, lining, can deteriorate leading to a potential build up of the acids, creosote and tars produced during combustion.

A chimney professional can advise on whether you have any chimney lining (for pre-1965 houses this may not be the case) and, if so, whether it is damaged. Often this will be necessitated if you are installing a new heating unit, such as a multi-fuel stove, which needs venting into your masonry chimney and, from which, a new chimney lining can help to maximise the performance.

Chimney liners need to be sized according to the fuel appliance they are venting and, nowadays, they tend to be made from stainless steel rather than the clay tiles of the past. They come as either rigid or flexible tubes in various thicknesses and thus strengths according to requirement. They are usually insulated, once installed, to enable them to heat up correctly and to allow for good draught control.

It is preferable to hire a trained installer to build or re-line your chimney to ensure that a full pre-inspection takes place, the correct materials are selected to suit your appliance and that a safe installation is achieved.
