The Contemporary Craft Fair 2010

Mon 3 May 2010

The Contemporary Craft Fair is so much more than just an exciting opportunity to buy directly from some of the best craftspeople in the UK. As craft & art education has been marginalised over the years, starting at primary school level, we wanted to make sure that the event would inspire families and watch as children become absorbed, relaxed and excited by being creative. That's what The Children's Craft Tent is all about. We are working with professional artists in partnership with Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter (RAMM) to make mosaics, weave, knit and crochet wool, make felt & model scrap all inspired by the Egyptian and Roman objects from the museum's collection. Children can develop their understanding how history has influenced contemporary life in exciting ways, which links directly into the National Curriculum. We've sneakily squeezed in a high level of learning whilst being tonnes of fun.

Obviously, not neglecting the grown ups, who can meet and buy from over 165 of some of the UK's finest designer makers. We have varied workshops in mosaic, basket weaving, knitting, wood go carving and monoprinting plus leading makers are demonstrating their crafts including Guild members Hilary Burns, Liz Clay and Madeliene Millington. Devon based, Internationally renowned potters Clive Bowen and Lisa Hammond will be demonstrating over the weekend, and visitors can watch wood turning, leather goods being made, metal forging, willow weaving, stone and wood being carved. By visiting the event you seriously become to appreciate that we are still a great nation of makers. These skills need to be celebrated, passed on, preserved, developed and crucially brought back into mainstream learning. The Contemporary Craft Fair brings to life the energy, tenacity, creativity and most importantly skill required to be a truly gifted craftsperson.

We would like to sincerely thank our many supporters: Bovey Tracey Town Council, Cllr Sally Morgan & Teignbridge District Council, Cllr George Gribble & Devon County Council, The Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Bovey Castle, Devon Life Magazine, JoJoMamamBebe, Dartmoor Partnerships, Royal Albert Memorial Musuem, Exeter, Selvedege Magazine and Craft & Design Magazine.

If you can spare a few hours over the weekend we would love to hear from you as we need volunteers to help with various roles. You'll get a pair of free weekend tickets in return!
