Spring into Yoga as the Days Get Longer and the Weather Gets Warmer

Mon 3 May 2010

The longer days stimulate a natural desire to awaken our bodies and breath in the fresh air. It feels more possible to challenge yourself, grow, stretch and expand your experiences when the winters' sharp edge is fading. The inclination to rest and relax, hibernate and keep warm begins to transform into a desire to change shape, feel healthy and absorb the vitality of spring. There is an excitement in the air, a possibility for adventure and maybe an urge to take up something new.

Dynamic Flow Yoga is wonderfully suited to this burst of spring energy. The yoga poses are sequenced together to build strength and stamina and the breath is focused in a strong, audible way to increase the effectiveness of the practice. Flexibility comes easier to a warm body, allowing muscles to lengthen and become more toned. The core muscles of the body can be used protectively for the more challenging poses and the heat built up from movement and breath detoxifies and purifies. The creativity and fluidity of this stream of yoga poses can be very energizing and a great boost to positivity in body and mind.

For those who already have a good grasp of yoga a flowing style may provide an opportunity to visit the more advanced poses or progress further in their own practice. The style of a yoga flow class is akin to a wave; it begins with a gradual, graceful swell and peaks with a crest of intensity before ebbing into the calm lapping waters of relaxation. The body, mind and breath increase in energy and a great focus can be achieved with a continuous, meditative flow of yoga poses. It is an exciting and challenging form of yoga, a good place for playful adventure and light hearted humour.
