Bovey Climate Action - Community Garden Success

Sun 26 Sep 2010

On the 1st March 2009, Bovey Climate Action launched Bovey's Community Garden at Parke, in partnership with the National Trust. Since then this project has literally grown and grown, bringing together over 30 people from our local community. They are all enjoying growing vegetables and fruit, sharing experience and knowledge, and making friends. Even in its first year, gardeners took home large amounts of absolutely fresh and delicious organic vegetables, so if you would like to join us in the garden, just come along or contact Gail, our coordinator, on gailbanham@tq139qt.freeserve.co.uk or 01626 832478. We are open on Wednesday mornings, Thursday evenings & alternate Saturday & Sunday mornings.

The original idea was to help local people, especially those who haven't been able to get an allotment, to get together and grow food that had ‘food yards' rather than ‘food miles'! The National Trust, and in particular its local team, based at Parke, have been an enormous help and encouragement. Even if you don't want to garden with us, just drop in and see our lovely garden when you're walking at Parke - if we're not there, have a look through the gates!

The gardeners are very grateful for the grant that Bovey Tracey's own ‘Tracey Almshouse Trust' recently gave; it will help with maintenance and buy new equipment, making sure that the Community Garden continues to be a practical asset to local people.
Bovey Climate Action has lots of other projects, including a Community Woodlanders Group - have a look at our website www.boveyclimateaction.org.uk - and if you would like to join Bovey contact Audrey Compton at audrey@boveyclimateaction.org.uk or ring 01626 852775.
