Bovey Tracey Swimming Pool Report
Fri 3 May 2019
The Bovey Tracey Heated Open Air Swimming Pool had a very successful 2018 thanks to the particularly good weather. Swimmers numbers were up by over 1,500.
Grants and donations were received from Bovey Tracey Freemasons Lodge and Teignbridge District Council for which we are very grateful.
Unfortunately, we did have various expenses last year totaling over £22,000. The pool covers needed replacing as they had become inefficient due to age and delamination. Efficient covers are vital to the Pool as they retain heat and reduce our energy and chemical consumption. New filter sand was also a major but very necessary expense. We purchased a remote submersible pool cleaner which can be put into the pool overnight to clean the pool. This helps to improve the pool water quality and reduce the amount of time it takes to manually vacuum the pool.
The Lifesaving and Swimming Clubs had a very successful year with a membership of over 130 children learning valuable skills. The Lifesaving Team represented the South West once again at the National Lifesaving Championships in Leeds coming away with several medals and trophies.
As well as the Clubs, we offer a varied programme including Early Morning Swims, lane swimming, Happy Hour, Ladies Night, various family discounted sessions and one-to-one swimming lessons with qualified swimming teachers. Swimming fitness programmes and equipment are available on request for those keen swimmers and those who appreciate the benefits of water-based exercises to help improve fitness. The pool is available to hire for private parties. This year we are also running an Aquacise class and hopefully an inflatable session. Please pick up a leaflet or check our website for further details and our opening times.
New to 2018 was the 5 Moors Challenge introduced to encourage locals and visitors to swim at five local outdoor pools; Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Chagford, Moretonhamstead and Bovey Tracey. A passport was created which was stamped at each pool following a swim and this was then entered into a draw. We are hoping to run this again this year.
2019 is the 50th anniversary of the pools first full season and we are hoping to run various events to celebrate this milestone. To kick the season off we opened from Boxing Day to New Years Day for the first time ever. We were very lucky with the weather and the event was well supported with plenty of very positive feedback.
The Pool is run by the Bovey Tracey Swimming Pool Association which is a registered charity. The Pool is run on a non-profit making basis, so any funds raised are used to improve pool facilities.
We are very fortunate to have over sixty volunteers helping in a variety of ways from manning the kiosk, helping with maintenance, running the Clubs etc without whom the Pool could not open. If you would like to become a volunteer please contact us, we are always in need of extra hands!
