Moor Merriment - A Dartmoor Weekend June 13th -15th

The village of Lustleigh will be hosting a weekend to celebrate the rich heritage of Dartmoor in music and dance. The event will take place in the village centre at various locations.

Friday 13th June Folk Concert (Village Hall)

Martin and Shan Graebe, exponents of the traditional songs of Devon.

Jim Causley, Devon born-and-bred, he is an acclaimed singer, song-writer and musician with a rich voice and entertaining stage presence.

Hosts, Dave Wills and Len Harvey Lustleigh members of the ‘Forty Years A Dartmoor Legend’ Kelly Quarry Blasters.

Saturday 14th June – Day of Dance (Village Centre, Town Orchard or Indoor Venues if raining)
Displays by Morris sides – including Cogs and Wheels, Tinners, Heather and Gorse and Beltane. Maypole dancing by local children. Workshops run throughout the day. A chance to try traditional Dartmoor Step and Broom Dancing as well as Cotswold Morris.

Music Sessions in the Town Orchard and at the Cleave Pub. In the evening, the famous Dartmoor Pixie Band will play for a Ceilidh in the Village Hall with bar. Local Craft and produce stalls.

The church of St John the Baptist, on an ancient site at the heart of the village will be opening its doors to welcome everyone to a look around the lovely interior and its flowers, with a guide on hand. Display by the Lustleigh Archive on village life in the past.

The day’s events will be opened by a peal of church bells and Lustleigh’s ‘Village Crier’ Dave Wills.

Refreshments at the pub/Village Hall and also an early evening visit from the Fish and Chip Van! If the weather is poor everything takes place in the Village Hall. It’ll be a great day, long party!

Sunday 15th June -Church of St John, Lustleigh Music Society Concert (Village Hall)

A special family Sunday service. At 6.30pm will see a repeat performance of Will Carnell and Alexa Mason’s DARTMOOR CANTATA. Sung by the Lustleigh Village Choir and accompanied by the Westerleigh Sinfonia Orchestra. This dramatic piece based on the legends of the Moor has been performed twice before, in Lustleigh and at Buckland Abbey.

Preceding this, children’s choirs from Moretonhampstead and Bovey Tracey will be performing the première of ‘GIANT BOLSTER OF HAYTOR’ under the direction of Andrew Downton.
