Free Computer Course for Beginners

Thu 10 Mar 2011

A few years ago the Government launched a UK Online scheme to get as many people using the Internet as possible.  This time last year ten million people had never been online to visit a website or carry out a search.  In 2011 that figure is nine million, so the scheme is working, and gradually those who hitherto saw no point are now queuing up to take computer courses.  Our world is geared to the Internet and those who have no access to it feel increasingly isolated.  How often have you heard on the BBC, “Go to our Website, bbc.co.uk” and as a result feel left out because you don’t know what that means or what to do?

There are plenty of reasons to use the Internet.  You can save money by paying bills and shopping online.  Many tasks are quicker and easier online – getting a tax disc, online banking, paying bills, and buying groceries.  Staying in touch with friends and family is simple, no matter how far away they are. The internet can be an instant source of news and information. You’ll find the latest TV listings, weather reports, and news from anywhere in the world. Whatever you’re interested in, there’s a website out there for you.

Bovey Tracey Library is an official UK Online Centre where free courses are run for beginners.  These are held on Wednesday mornings (when the library is shut to minimise interruptions), and last for one hour.  Classes are restricted to three people to guarantee individual attention and are taken at a slow pace to ensure everyone understands each stage. These have been running since 2008 so over a hundred local people have already been introduced to the Internet, set up email accounts and learnt how to write text documents on a computer.

Jeana Johnson is currently on the course in Bovey Library and writes, “For the first time I feel that the computer could be of value rather than the ogre in the room.  This is due in no small part to your patience, kindness and understand of our trembling and trepidation”.  Jenny Griffee says, “This is an excellent course for beginners.  Angela is so patient”.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone keen to join the waiting list for the course or who wishes to find out further details.  Please ring me on 01364 661285 for details.
