I imagine that by the time you read this we will be well into the festive season which is why I want to tell you about our  library Christmas events.  On Friday 14 December we begin with Mince Pie Friday.  This has become a tradition and I think we look forward to it as much as our borrowers. However, I’m beginning to think we might need to rename it as stollen cake has become more popular than mince pies.  Must be something to do with Brexit! Almost as popular as stollen cake are our surprise, wrapped books. It is meant to be fun and you could pick something that isn’t to your taste but we have had people discover new authors which is great.

This will be followed by a craft event for children on Thursday 20 December at 2.00 run by Bovey Library Action Support Team (BLAST), our Friends’ Group. They are a crafty group so there’ll be lots of fun, Christmassy decorations to make. Our Christmas raffle will also be drawn then.

Now I want to take you into the New Year. For several years Libraries Unlimited have run a county wide event called Active Life Active Mind.  It has previously taken place in October but this time will be in January making it a perfect opportunity for you to practise some of your New Year resolutions.

We have two events planned. On Wednesday 14 January Anna White is hosting a yoga session for beginners. Perhaps you have thought of joining a yoga class but were put off by the thought of being the beginner in a well-established group. This class is for beginners.  You will be with others who are new to yoga so there’s no need to feel anxious.  It is a great opportunity to try yoga and see if it is for you.

Our second event is a Dartmoor walk which will follow the story of Eden Phillpott’s novel, The Forest on the Hill. The novel is set in and around Ilsington and Yarner Wood and the walk will visit some of the buildings and sites featured.  Phil Page is leading the walk and as he has lived in Yarner Wood for over 30 years he knows the area well.

Both events are free but numbers are limited.  If you would to join either of them please call into the library for a ticket. Let me take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Phil and Anna for their generous help.

Finally can I thank everyone who has kindly donated books to the library. We have been given books that are so new they aren’t even in the library catalogue. They have really boosted our stock and have been enjoyed by many.

Now this really is finally – Happy Christmas everyone from us all in the library and we look forward to seeing you all next year.
