Stress Management with Tai chi/Qigong

Tue 11 Feb 2020

My name is Vincent. I am a pharmacist with a background in science and years of experience. I am feeling powerless about the number of prescriptions for depression, anxiety and insomnia that are increasing year by year and I’m aware that these conditions are linked with modern life.

However, I am also qualified in Chinese medicine, which includes being an instructor in Tai Chi/Qi Gong, Tui Na massage, Acupuncture and Acupressure. I have studied the science behind Alternative Medicines and Techniques, and I have experience in managing the concept of energy in health, body and mind, beyond the use of western medicines.

I believe Tai chi is a perfect tool which is a truly holistic approach designed to counteract the everyday stresses of life, through gentle movements, breathing and relaxation.

Most often our stress responses are so mild that it goes entirely unnoticed.

However, the effects of stress can be accumulative and be long-lasting. The stress response can be overwhelming and may be harmful to our body’s system and we can develop conditions such as, asthma, cardiovascular disease, depression, headaches, hypertension and many others.

Qigong is an integrated mind-body healing method which has been practiced in China for thousands of years, with remarkable results. The Chinese have long treasured Qigong for its effectiveness both in healing and preventing disease, and more recently it is used in conjunction with modern medicine to treat all kind of conditions especially those related with stress or anxiety.

Practicing Qigong can strengthen muscles, maintain bone mass, prevent health conditions and improve our immune system. With balance training exercises it can also reduce falls and improve co-ordination and confidence.

I am going to be running Tai Chi/Qigong classes on Tuesday mornings 10:00 am to 11:15 am at Ullacombe Farm, Haytor and Lustleigh Village Hall, evenings, 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm from 14th January. In addition, I’m running a workshop on Saturday the 8th February at Ullacombe Farm about improving the immune system and reducing stress with Qigong and alternative medicines.

The class structure will be a mixture of stretches and specific Qigong and Tai chi exercises, sitting or standing Qigong and meditation and discussion of important aspects of Chinese Medicine when required.
