Welcome to Moorland Community Care Group

Tue 2 Mar 2021

Moorland Community Care Group is a local charitable organisation whose aim is to provide friendly support to elderly and isolated people living in Bovey Tracey, Ashburton and Buckfastleigh. Our support includes befriending, advice and information, practical help such as shopping or gardening, lunch clubs (when Covid restrictions allow), and support after hospital discharge.

We would love to tell you about our new project that brings together local communities over the phone. If you don’t have the internet, or don’t wish to use it, but would like contact with other people, the phone activity groups we run might be a good thing to try.

There’s something for most people to enjoy in the programme. But…you might never have met us or know anyone else who joins the groups, which can make it really hard to pick up the phone, even if you’re feeling a bit lonely.

We want to let you know how normal it is to be nervous about doing something for the first time, even from your armchair! Our phone activity groups are friendly gatherings, and the host will make you feel really welcome. The groups average 6 or 7 people and we have new people joining all the time.

If you’d like to pop in for 5 minutes with no obligation to stay – that’s fine. It’s a very gentle space to come into – if you’d prefer to just listen in without speaking, that’s fine. If you only want to come when it’s raining – that’s fine too! No commitment required.

You might be sceptical about joining a group where no-one can see each other – I mean, exercise on the phone?! We’d like to think, with people returning to our groups again and again over the last 6 months, that they really do work. Hearing is believing! To get on the calls, you need to call us first.

We’re on 01364 712 013. Sara Hurley and Suzy Williamson, Moorland Community Care Group
