Bovey Swimming Pool to Open in April

Sun 28 Feb 2010

The Bovey Tracey Swimming Pool will open for the 2010 season on Saturday 24th April at 2.15pm. Improvements for this year include a new pool liner and refurbishment of the pool surround. Thanks go in particular to The Tracey Almshouse Trust, Ugbrooke Enviromentals and The Town Trust for their support, without which these improvements would not have been possible. A solar hot water system has been installed to heat the showers. This will help reduce heating costs and our CO2 emissions. A display will be mounted to highlight the amount of energy generated. This project was kindly supported by Bovey Climate Action and the Dartmoor Sustainable Development Fund. A new pool hoist has also been purchased to help disabled swimmers access the pool.

For anyone new to the Pool, it is a beautifully heated open air pool with sun terrace and spectator area, disabled facilities and toddler pool. After your swim, refreshments are available to be enjoyed in the adjoining park. The Pool is open every afternoon from 2.15pm - 7pm weekdays and 2.15pm - 6pm weekends plus Saturday morning general swimming and Sunday morning lane swimming between 11am and 12.30pm. We will be open every weekday morning 11am - 12.30pm in the school holidays. Evening activities include children's swimming clubs, lifesaving and lane swimming. We also run early morning swim sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays commencing Monday 17th May. One to one swimming lessons are available with qualified swimming teachers.

The Pool is run by the Bovey Tracey Swimming Pool Association which is a registered charity. Over eighty volunteers ranging in age from 15 to 74 help to run the entrance kiosk and new volunteers are always welcome. The Pool is run on a non profit making basis, any funds raised are used to improve pool facilities. KEEP FIT - KEEP SWIMMING. Did you know that 30 minutes of exercise in the pool is the same as 45 minutes on land? Water provides resistance which improves muscle strength but water buoyancy reduces stress on joints. An individual's weight in the water is only about 10% of normal weight. Swimming is also an excellent form of aerobic exercise which increases cardiovascular function.
