Contemporary Craft Fair 2011

Tue 3 May 2011

Mill Marsh Park / Bovey Tracey / June 10-12, 2011

This year’s Contemporary Craft Fair is brimming opportunities to meet makers with inspirational ideas. Meeting and buying directly from over 165 of some of the UK’s finest designer makers has to be the most important elements of the event. We’ve assembled an unrivalled variety of craftspeople from all over the country which is proving to be our most exciting event yet.

Ceramics features strongly with over 50 potters selling their work as well as watching celebrated potter Lisa Hammond demonstrate throughout the weekend. The Westcountry Potters Association are back and RAMP (Roop and Al Make Pots) will also be demonstrating their potting skills.

We are particularly excited that there will be an exhibition called Fired UP. This Crafts Council initiative aims to bring ceramics back into junior schools. Working in partnership with Plymouth College of Art, the Fair will showcase the results from the ceramics residencies in schools across Devon & Cornwall.

We’ll be hosting the Great Windsor Chair Race, in pre-training for our Olympic year, furniture makers Chris Eckersley and William Warren will be pitted against each other to who can make the most Windsor chairs over the weekend. It’s not just speed but skill, as only the best will win! Visitors can also watch wood turning, furniture making, metal forging, willow weaving, stone and wood being carved.

The humble bumble bee will be featured throughout the Fair in support of Plan Bee, the Co-Operative’s campaign to stop the dwindling world bee population. The focal point will be the Bee Keepers Garden with beehives, bee friendly planting, complimenting  beautifully handmade outdoor features.

The children will be thoroughly entertained by our team of artists and the team from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum with a fantastic variety of insect themed craft activities. Bridget’s Bunting will also be inviting visitors to contribute to the bunting being made to celebrate the Devon Guild’s 25th anniversary at The Riverside Mill.

If you can spare a few hours over the weekend we would love to hear from you as we need volunteers to help with various roles. You’ll get a free weekend ticket in return!
